Shopping and Dining

There are several boutiques, locally owned shops, and consignment stores in Wasilla. Design on a Dime sells a wide variety of fabrics, scarves, embellishments, and accessories to keep customers looking fashionable. Residents can purchase everyday essentials at one of several big-name stores, including Fred Meyer, Walmart Supercenter, Sears, Home Depot, and Target. Popular local restaurants serve up everything from American classics and Mexican favorites to Italian, Chinese, Thai, and Japanese. Metro Café on Lucille is known for its coffee, pastries, and pleasant atmosphere. With its tapas plates, live music, and excellent wine selection, The Grape Tap is a regular date-night pick.

Parks and Recreation

Wasilla’s prime location makes it an ideal launching spot for recreational activities. Located in between the Matanuska and Susitna Valleys and in between the Wasilla and Lucile Lakes, it offers convenient access to the great outdoors for fishing, ice fishing, boaters, campers, and hikers. In addition to the city’s six amenity-rich parks, residents can play at one of several nearby state parks, including Big Lake North State Recreation Area, Big Lake South State Recreation Site, Nancy Lake State Recreation Area, and the Rocky Lake State Recreation Site. Denali National Park is also within driving distance.

Favorite local activities include taking in a concert at the outdoor amphitheater in Iditapark; skating at the skateboard park; playing volleyball, basketball, and tennis; biking on the city’s 10 miles of trail; racing on the local BMX track; camping at Lake Lucile Park; swimming at Newcomb Park; climbing, playing, and swinging on the equipment at Nunley Park; and watching the salmon travel along one of many area creeks. Residents also can grow their own food on one of the individual plots in the city’s community garden or take in an Alaska Avalanche game at the Curtis D. Menard Memorial Sports Center. The city of Wasilla also sponsors several popular community events: the 4th of July Celebration, the summer Music in the Park series, and the Alaska Arbor Day Celebration.

Living

Originally a self-contained community, the opening of the George Parks Highway combined with the city’s relatively affordable housing has turned Wasilla into a rapidly growing bedroom community. Most Wasilla real estate in this area are single-family homes situated on large, semi-rural lots. Undeveloped land is also available for purchase. Median home cost in 2012 was $231,900, considerably less than in the nearby city of Anchorage.
